Mushroom Farm: Frequently Asked Questions

Key Tips

  • Keep your Mushroom Farm as far away from the AC or Heater - the dry air can prevent or slow down  your Mushroom Farm's growth
  • If you don’t see any growth in 10 days, take the bag out of the box and re-soak your kit overnight in cold water. Additional watering will help boost your Mushroom Farm into fruiting.

Top 3 Questions

1. Why aren't my mushrooms growing?
You'll typically notice growth after about 7 days. If your mushroom kit is being stubborn, take the following additional steps to give it a boost:
  1. Score the surface of the mushroom kit with a fork and re-soak the kit overnight.
  2. Place kit in a brighter area (filtered light is best).
  3. Keep the surface saturated. The more water the better.
With additional moisture and light your mushroom kit should pin after another week.
2. Are the mushrooms edible?
Yes! Oyster mushrooms are a gourmet variety which should be enjoyed cooked.
3. Should I grow the box standing up or laying down?
Either or! Your mushrooms will grow as long as the surface stays moist and is exposed to a little light.

About The Mushroom Farm

1. What type of mushroom does the Back to the Roots mushroom farm grow?
Our mushroom farm grows gourmet Pearl Oyster mushrooms. They're commonly found in Europe and Asia and are used increasingly in a variety of cuisines for their velvety texture, smooth taste, and dense nutrient content. We are currently working on a shiitake mushroom farm, so stay tuned!
2. What is the difference between the Mushroom Farm and the Mushroom Mini Farm?
The original Back to the Roots Mushroom Farm is guaranteed to grow at least 2 harvests and when you post a picture of your fruiting Mushroom Farm on our Facebook Page, our Community Happyness Team will donate a Mushroom Farm to an elementary classroom of your choice!
3. What is the white layer covering the farm?
The white layer is mycelium! It’s similar to the “roots” of the mushrooms (if mushrooms had roots).
4. What do Oyster mushrooms taste like?
Oyster mushrooms have a mild flavor that is very versatile when it comes to the food they complement. They have a delicate, velvety texture that pairs well in pastas, skewers, soups, salads, and anything else you like to put mushrooms in! They taste amazing, especially when they're so fresh, and can be eaten raw or cooked. Chef Alice Waters of acclaimed Berkeley restaurant Chez Panisse has raved about their authentic, nutty, flavor. See what she has to say here!
5. What are the health benefits of oyster mushrooms?
Oyster mushrooms are extremely healthy and rich, given that one-third of their dry weight is protein. They contain amino acids and enzymes that have been shown to boost the immune system and are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B complex, and most of the mineral salts required by the human body. Calcium, phosphorous and iron content in oyster mushrooms are double the amount found in most meats. They are also known to lower cholesterol, boost the immune system, and may even inhibit tumor growth.
6. Are the mushrooms organic?
Yes! Back To The Roots mushroom farms are now USDA certified organic, meaning they are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. The Growing Process

1. I don't have a green thumb...how easy are the mushrooms to grow?
It certainly is! As easy as:
  1. Opening the package and following the directions on the side of the box
  2. Misting
  3. Harvesting...
in just 10-15 days! It's so easy and our main supporters are kids that are growing their own food!
2. How long can I store the farm before I need to start growing it?
The farm will stay fresh in the box for months before you start growing your mushrooms. Make sure you keep your farm in a cool area/room that doesn't receive any direct sunlight (i.e., closet, bedroom). Once opened you just need oxygen, water, and light to activate your farm!
3. Where should I grow my farm?
All you need is a window sill, perfect for you urban dwellers out there! Ideally, you want to grow your mushrooms indoors with indirect sunlight and a bit of fresh air. Indirect sunlight will help the mushroom caps develop to their full potential. Once you see the tiny pinheads pop out, they'll double in size each day!
4. My home is always dry and/or I need tips for high altitude.
Try growing your farm using a humidity tent. Take a plastic bag or newspaper and cover the kit. Spray/drizzle water directly on to the mushroom kit everyday. The humidity tent helps trap in the moisture and you will notice a little moisture present on the surface of the mycelium.
Remember, mushrooms need oxygen so it's important to remove the additional plastic bag / newspaper as soon as you notice mushrooms growing. Then water the Mushroom Farm as instructed on our box. The more water you give your mushrooms the bigger and faster they grow so don't ever be afraid of over-watering!
5. What if I have a cat or dog?
None of our customers have reported that their pets have tried to eat the mushrooms as they grew. So if you're worried for you four legged friend, they'll be fine.
6. I'm traveling for a few days. Is it ok if I don't water the farm?
We recommend that you continue to mist daily. Still, if you can’t find a mushroom farm babysitter, just re-soak your mushroom farm over night when you return for an extra boost!
7. When should I 'harvest' the mushrooms?
As soon as you notice that your mushrooms aren’t doubling in size each day, you can pick off the entire crop. A brown ring around the edge of the mushroom cap is a telltale sign that your mushrooms are ready to harvest!
8. How do I 'harvest' the mushrooms?
You just pluck them off with your hands (they'll come off easy!)
9. How long do the harvested mushrooms last for?
Since you've grown them yourself, you can store them for up to 2 weeks. In fact, gourmet mushrooms are rarely found in grocery stores because they’re extremely delicate and have a short shelf-life. Best to grow your mushrooms at home!
10. How should I store them?
It is best to store them in a paper bag in the refrigerator. In the paper bag their excess moisture is absorbed by the bag, keeping it off your mushrooms but close enough to retain some moisture!
11. What should I do with my mushrooms after I finish growing them?
Eat them of course!:) We have some delicious mushroom recipes created by chefs and wonderful bloggers a like! Feel free to share your recipes with us as well!
12. My mushrooms are dry, can I still eat them?
Yes, cooking with dried mushrooms is extremely popular! Just soak them in warm water or your favorite broth before sauteing!
13. How many mushrooms will grow from the farm?
Each crop varies in size but you can grow at least 2 crops from one box. So far the going record is 10 crops from one mushroom farm! Email us at contact@backtotheroots.com if you beat the record!

Troubleshooting

1. My farm grew a beautiful first crop but the second one hasn't come in--what's wrong?
Don't worry. Patience is key! Each subsequent crop will take several weeks to begin growing. Here are couple tips for better success:
  1. Re-soak your Mushroom Farm for a few hours, up to overnight.
  2. Mind temperature: After the first harvest, your Mushroom Farm is more sensitive to temperature. Try to keep the kit in a bright area around 70 degrees if possible.
  3. Water, water, water!: Don't let it dry out. You can even grow your farm using a humidity tent.
