Aquaponics, an ancient farming method, has recently been revolutionizing the way our planet grows food. With Back to the Roots’ Water Garden, you can easily try your hand at this farming method. It condenses all the amazing features of large-scale aquaponics into a 3-gallon fish tank that can sit in the corner of your kitchen or classroom. Our self-cleaning fish tank grows your food for you – and takes all the hassle out of keeping fish tanks clean. Our Water Garden creates a closed-loop ecosystem where the fish fertilize the plants and the plants clean the water!
The Ancient Aztecs were one of the first to develop this sustainable farming method. It uses 90% less water than traditional farming methods by combining aquaculture (fish cultivation) with hydroponics (plant cultivation in water, rather than soil). In this 3-gallon aquaponics system, the water from the fish tank is pumped up to the plant grow bed, where beneficial nitrifying bacteria growing both around and on the plant roots convert the ammonia-rich fish waste into nitrites and then nitrates. These nitrates provide all the nutrients plants need to grow. Which means you have a self-cleaning fish tank and self-growing veggies in a beautiful symbiotic relationship!
The Water Garden is best suited for sprouts, leafy greens and herbs. We include organic radish sprout and wheat grass seeds by Handy Pantry in your order. Other plants that do well in our Water Garden include parsley, alfalfa, cilantro, sprouts, arugula, mint, mixed greens, and various types of basil.
The Water Garden comes with everything you’ll need to get started on your aquaponics project. The only thing you need to do is buy your fish and then you can watch your plants grow!
When you order our Water Garden, you’ll get:
Your water garden is just like any other garden. Sun loving plants like basil should be placed in a warm area with direct sunlight (a south-facing window is ideal). Plants like cilantro should be placed in a bright area, but slightly cooler. The Water Garden includes easy-to-grow sprouts and wheatgrass, which will fare well in any condition.
If you do not have a sunny area to keep your Water Garden, you can grow various sprouts, wheatgrass, houseplants, and even scallions. As you experiment, remember that most plants that have small or thin leaves do not need as much sun as herbs & greens with bigger, broader leaves.
Tip: In order to prevent algae from growing in your self-cleaning tank, do your best to block the sunlight from hitting the water in the tank (where your fish lives) while still allowing sun to reach the plants growing on top. You can easily add a decorative aquarium backing to block out sun if your tank is in a window.
Back to the Roots’ Water Garden is the easiest self-cleaning fish tank and gardening systems on the market.
