The Water Garden Duo is an award-winning home ecosystem that makes the perfect gift, educational family project, or piece of living home decor.

Choose between setting up your Water Garden Duo via hydroponics or aquaponics.

Hydroponics will create a sleek, low maintenance, self-watering planter for growing luscious bamboo, succulents, and houseplants!  Customize the interior of the tank however you'd like and create a beautiful underwater scene.

If you choose to add a fish to your Water Garden, you get to experience the magic of aquaponics! Your Water Garden becomes a self-cleaning fish tank that also grows fresh food up top. The fish waste fertilizes the plants on top and the plants clean the water — so fewer water changes required.

Love it!

So far our aquarium has been a great success. Our happy little beta brings us lots of joy. It’s been great to watch our greens sprout up, too.

It works

I wasn’t sure what to expect. My kid studied ecosystems in school all year, so I thought “let’s see what happens.” I’m on my second harvest of sprouts. My salads are fancier. Admiral Ackbar is thriving. My kid is thrilled.

Happy with my Water Garden

I got my betta on September 1, 2021 so I've had him for 7 months. We just returned from a unplanned 3 week trip and he's doing fine. Between my automatic feeder and my daughter checking on him mid-way through, we got him through. I cleaned the tank before we left and brought the water level up to touching the underside of the white top. When we returned, it was about 2 inches down, so I added RO purified water then did a 10% tank change. I'll do another change tomorrow.

Overall, the tank is the bare minimum size for a betta. I think he gets bored, but he perks up when he's hungry. When he dies, I will probably get a freshwater shrimp or a snail.

Great Tank

We have had our hydroponics/aquaponics ecosystem for about 4 years or so. I love it. We have a little plant and a betta fish. Both thrive in our tank. I get a lot of compliments from it. I would highly recommend the system to anyone who is considering it.

Fish Torture due to Poor Design

There are so many flaws in the design of this tank. Really, just get a large fish tank, a pump, and some grow cups with medium and I'm sure you could build something... so much betta.

Here are the issues I experienced, which ultimately led to the premature death (only two months after purchase) of my beloved betta fish, Rufish Rainwright:

- The grow medium, being partially submerged in a very small, humid enclosure, is subject to fungus / mold (at least, they didn't include any instructions on how to prevent fungus growth, such as changing the medium - I saw instructions for washing the grow stones, which I did). I'm certain the grey fungus that grew in my medium is exactly what spread to my Betta's fins and eventually covered his whole body.

- The 3-gallon tank is really too small for the fish to live a tolerable life - a stressed fish is way more prone to disease! Bettas need at least a 5-gallon space to be at equilibrium.

- There is no heater included with this setup, I had to buy a small one separately. Bettas are a tropical fish and need water between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

- The noise and velocity of the water coming from the top can add stress for bettas. They like very quiet, calm water, so a whisper filter is really what they need.

- "Self-cleaning" is a lie. This tank needs to be changed AT LEAST once every two weeks, perhaps you can stretch it if you add a couple of snails, which I did. There is no mechanical filter, and roots are not enough of a filter to…
