Overview
Our Regenerative Organic Certified® Elecampane seeds from Gaia Herbs® grow into a tall, perennial herb with large, bright green leaves and clusters of yellow flowers. Traditionally used for respiratory health and digestive support, Elecampane also attracts pollinators and adds a bold presence to any garden. Its roots are rich in inulin, supporting healthy digestion.
Conditions
Elecampane thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It prefers soil rich in organic matter but can tolerate a variety of soil types, growing best with consistent moisture.
Planting
Cold stratify* 2–4 weeks, and then plant indoors 2–63weeks before the last frost. Press 2–3 seeds into the soil surface of each starter pot. Thin to the one strongest per pot once a few inches tall, and transition outside (harden) 7 days before transplanting outdoors into a raised soil bed, leaving 2" of pot exposed.
*Cold stratify: place seeds in the fridge in a moist, folded paper towel before planting.
Care
Once established, Elecampane is relatively low-maintenance. Water during dry periods, remove spent flowers to encourage continued growth, and give plants plenty of space to accommodate their size.
Pests and Disease
Elecampane is naturally hardy and resistant to most pests and diseases. Occasional aphids or fungal spots may appear, but good spacing, airflow, and organic treatments help keep plants healthy—here’s a link to our favorite homemade insecticidal soap recipe for plants! Proper drainage and avoiding overwatering also help prevent root rot.
Harvest
Harvest leaves and flowers when fully grown for teas or infusions. Roots can be harvested in the fall of the second year for traditional herbal uses.
