!Overview
Our Regenerative Organic Certified® Valerian seeds grow into a fragrant, perennial herb with delicate flowers and sweet-smelling roots. Valerian has been used for centuries for its calming effects, while also attracting pollinators to your garden.
Conditions
Valerian prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It thrives in garden beds, borders, or containers with consistent moisture.
Planting
Cold stratify* 2–4 weeks, and then plant indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost. Plant 2–3 seeds on the soil surface of each starter pot - do not cover (needs light). Thin to the one strongest per pot, and transition outside (harden) 7 days before transplanting outdoors into a raised soil bed, leaving 2" of pot exposed.
*Cold stratify: place seeds in the fridge in a moist, folded paper towel before planting.
Care
Once established, valerian is low-maintenance. Water regularly, especially in dry periods, and trim back flowers to encourage bushier growth. It tolerates most soil types but thrives with a little organic compost.
Pests and Disease
Valerian is generally hardy and resistant to most pests. Occasional aphids or fungal spots may appear, but good airflow, proper spacing, and careful watering usually prevent problems. Organic treatments can be applied if needed — here’s a link to our favorite homemade insecticidal soap recipe for plants! Proper drainage and avoiding overwatering also help prevent root rot.
Harvest
Harvest valerian roots in the fall of the second year for maximum potency. Leaves and flowers can be harvested anytime for teas, tinctures, or garden enjoyment.
